The first principal of Tamkang Senior High was George William Mackay, the son of Dr. George Leslie Mackay. Tamkang Senior High is famous for its romantic surroundings in Taiwan and has been for years. The design of the campus is based on the European university style and also traditional Eastern Style, which creates an elegant learning atmosphere as well as the best environment for inspiring and cultivating humanities and attitude. It stands for not only the spirit of Dr. Mackay and culture, but also is a treasure of Taiwan.
In 1881, Dr. Mackay went back to Tamsui after raising funds from the people in Oxford, Canada. He chose a location, designed and built the Oxford College. It was named as Oxford College in honor of the people in Oxford for their enthusiastic deication and donation during the period of construction. Later, it has become an important place for missionaries, medical care, and education. Also, it is the first ever private museum in Taiwan.
